Music is the Magic You’ve Been Searching For

Music. That’s what we call it. In reality, it is magic.

Do you wish to be in a ballroom, dancing with the love of your life and whispering sweet nothings into their ears? Try Enrique Iglesias, Sam Smith, Bruno Mars.

Do you want to take a jog in the morning to refresh your mind and replenish your store of energy and motivation? Play Eminem, Pitbull, Swedish House Mafia.

Do you want to feel cool, inspired, and like you can take on the world? Listen to J. Cole (highly recommend), Maleek Berry, Drake, Odunsi (The Engine).

The Faces of Music

Music is a vehicle: it can transport you to any place in the world, any emotion. It can transport you to any time. Do you miss your lover and want to revisit what you had? Let OMI’s “Cheerleader” come on the radio — the song you both loved so much — and you would instantly be back in that period.

Music is medicine: it can give you respite, no matter how brief, from the travails of this world. Did you lose your job? A parent? Your lover? Feel yourself slipping away and losing your grip on sanity? Put on some Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, Adele, Lewis Capaldi and cry your heart out. Or Davido, Jason Derulo, Chris Brown, Tekno Miles and groove your pain way.

Music inspires: it can help you find that spark you need to write a career-defining novel, poem, copy. It can help you find the solution to a math problem. Or discover a defense argument in favor of your criminal client that has you shouting eureka!

Music is contemplative: it can help you decide between making that big career move and staying back in the city and role you’ve grown to love so much. It can help you figure out the “answers to the universe” or the “secret of the human psyche.” Put on some Brymo, Yanni, Enya, and bring out your inner guru. (Yeah, I know I included Brymo — jump and pass.)

Music is all around us, like magic is. It is in the pattering of the rain on your zinc roof. In the steady, but rhythmic movement of a stream. In the meowing of my cat that makes me all attentive and rushing to find out what it needs. In the sound of my name on my lover’s lips.

Music is everything, does everything. It is purely, and simply, magic.

I have only scratched the surface of what music can do and what songs/artists are suitable for what. So, go ahead and pitch your thoughts on the subject in the comments below. Do the same if you disagree with something I’ve written.

Cheers! And don’t forget to listen to some music today.
